Classic PC Game 1: Deathtrack

I've decided to devote a weekly (hopefully) post to classic PC games. I'll feature a different game in each post and do the same for classic NES console games and possibly arcade games.

Anyway, in no particular order other than what comes to mind each week, I present Deathtrack (1989) as the first game. This game sticks out for a couple of reasons. First, it is one of my all-time-favorite racing games. Such games are on my mind at the moment due to my current addiction to Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Second, I recall this being one of the first PC games I purchased with my own money. At the time, the only decent place to buy games was Babbages, and the only Babbages store around was in Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg. So, I guess my parents took me down there and I bought this game and probably a couple others. If I'm not mistaken, it may be the same trip when I bought my FlightStick. Good times!

Probably my favorite weapon from the game was known as a Terminator. The game manual described the Terminator this way:

Picture a high-explosive warhead strapped to a skateboard. Now slap on a rocket pack and launch it from your machine, and you have a Terminator.

You also had access to missiles, beams, mines, lasers, caltrops (sort of like medieval spike strips), machine guns, ram spikes, and wheel spikes. Besides weapons, you could spend your race winnings on auto parts (engines, brakes, tires, armor, etc.). When I first got this game, I only had CGA graphics, so the gameplay was in black-and-white. No matter, I still LOVED this game! Plus, it was like playing a new game when I finally upgraded to VGA.

Anyone else remember this game?

Whoa! I tried playing this thing on my PC a few years ago...its impossible, even with utilities that slow your system down. You shoot around the track in 15 seconds. Very sad :( They need to remake it.

I think I was with you when you bought that game!! I bought Starflight 2 that very same trip! I remember that flight stick. Robert had the same one.

I think you are right, Kris. I seem to recall my grandmother driving us down there so we could buy some games, and I believe I also bought Starflight 2 on that trip. I'm surprised you didn't have a FlightStick too...they were all the rage back then!

Ryan, I still remember the Christmas when you got the Tandy. I remember it was first set up in your dining room, and I remember playing Black Cauldron there. Good times! I was the last of the group, I think, to get what was then referred to as an IBM-compatible computer, having only the raw computing power of my Atari 800, so I have fond memories of my first exposure to Sierra adventure games at your house, Robert's, etc.

First PC games were Chess and some odd space station game. I can't remember the name of it, but it was rather like taking four games of space invaders, putting them together so that the 'ground' on all four made a square, and shrinking it down into a little 6x6 inch screen. Yes, these were pre-IBM PCs: they were my dad's Osborne 'portable' computers. They could be considered a laptop is you had massive legs, could tolerate pain, and had a power supply handy. Good times.
