Super Mario Land (1989) was one of the first games I got for the original Game Boy system and possibly my all-time favorite for that platform (at least my favorite single player game). I've always been a big fan of the Mario games since I first played the original Super Mario Bros. game on the NES. The Mario character actually first appeared in the Donkey Kong arcade game in 1981 and has been in an
impressive number of games ever since. I've enjoyed most of the platform games Mario has appeared in over the years (with the exception of Super Mario Sunshine), and I love a lot of the non-platforms as well (Dr. Mario, Super Mario Kart, Mario Tennis). In fact, Mario, Zelda, and the Metroid character franchises are one of the main reasons I decided to get a Gamecube instead of a PS2 or Xbox.
I liked Super Mario Land because it was a relatively short game and could be won in a reasonable amount of time. This was very important back in the day, as there was no way to save your game. What I really loved about this game were the two levels where you were in a vehicle: first a submarine and then an airplane. It also had a funky Easter Island-themed world that was pretty cool. Anyway, I'll have to see if I can dig this game up one of these days to play on the
Game Boy Player.
